Question 1

How do Pakistani universities convert percentage or marks into CGPA?

Accepted Answer

Most universities across Pakistan follow the unified semester grading policy defined by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). Marks are translated into letter grades (A, B, C, D, F) which carry specific grade points (from 0.00 to 4.00). Generally, 85% and above yields a 4.00 CGPA, 80–84% awards 3.66–3.99, 75–79% awards 3.33–3.65, and 60% represents the minimum 2.00 CGPA threshold for graduation.

Question 2

How is CGPA converted back to percentage for PPSC, FPSC, or CSS job applications?

Accepted Answer

For competitive tests (like Punjab Public Service Commission, Federal Public Service Commission, and CSS), job advertisements often state eligibility in terms of "1st Division or equivalent CGPA". Under HEC guidelines, a CGPA of 3.00 out of 4.00 (or 60%+ in annual systems) is considered First Division. When a university transcript does not provide an official percentage, the commission uses the HEC conversion formula: Percentage = CGPA × 20 + baseline adjustment, or the university-specific conversion certificate provided on your transcript.

Question 3

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

Accepted Answer

GPA (Grade Point Average) measures your academic performance for a single semester based on the credit hours and grades earned in those specific courses. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) is the weighted average of all semesters combined throughout your entire degree program.

Question 4

What is the minimum CGPA required to graduate or apply for an MS/MPhil in Pakistan?

Accepted Answer

Under HEC Pakistan criteria, the minimum CGPA required to graduate with a 4-year BS/BSc (Hons) degree is 2.00 out of 4.00 (Second Division). For admission into an MS/MPhil program or PhD, HEC requires a minimum CGPA of 2.50 out of 4.00 (semester system) or 50% marks (annual system).

Question 5

Why do NUST, FAST-NUCES, and Punjab University have different CGPA scales?

Accepted Answer

While all Pakistani universities adhere to the 4.00 maximum scale, individual academic councils have autonomous authority over internal grade boundaries. For example, NUST and FAST-NUCES employ relative grading curves where grade boundaries fluctuate based on class averages, and an absolute "A" requires 90%+. Punjab University assigns fixed points (e.g. 80–84% is 3.70, 75–79% is 3.30).

Question 6

Can I calculate both Semester GPA and updated Cumulative CGPA together?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our Semester Course Calculator allows you to list your current semester subjects and credit hours to obtain your current semester GPA. By toggling "Include Previous Semesters", you can enter your previous CGPA and completed credit hours to instantly simulate your new cumulative CGPA.
